My Story
My name is Vestine Ncungu, and I am a survivor of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi. I was just 11 years old when I had to run for my life and hide in the trees to escape the militia soldiers, Interahamwe, killing members of my ethnic group, the Tutsis. After losing my entire family in a genocide that killed more than one million people, I decided to live a life that would honor their memory. I tell my story both to inspire others to overcome hardships and to warn people about the dangers of allowing hatred to control our actions.
